Academic Skills Unit (ASU) for Higher Education Students

The Academic Skills Unit (ASU) provides local higher education students with academic skills support through tutoring in workshops and one-on-one mentoring. The program is integrated with subject studies and aims to assist you with transition into higher education and to improve your academic performance. In collaboration with Degree Course Leaders and subject teachers, the ASU arranges for specialist teachers to mentor students within and/or in addition to class time. Feedback and advice is tailored to your individual needs. The academic skills for undergraduate programs are focused on developing your key skills in:

  • Academic Culture

  • Active Listening and Note Taking

  • Learning and Assessment in Higher Education

  • Academic Writing Skills

  • Academic Communication

  • Discipline Language      

  • Critical Reading and Analysis

  • Reviewing and Summarising

  • Presentations

  • Exams
