Maintaining mental well-being
At times, events in life can put significant pressure on us. These events might include the demands of studying, conflict at home, financial pressures, relationship issues or the loss of a loved one. We may respond to stressors such as these with feelings of helplessness, frustration, anger, sadness or regret. Often, such reactions are normal. However, sometimes stress may result in anxiety, depression or other mental health issues. For some people, there may not be an obvious trigger.
Not only may stress impact on our feelings, it may also lead to changes in behaviour such as sleep disturbances, changes to appetite, withdrawing from friends, snapping at loved ones or poor attendance in class. In desperation, some people turn to alcohol and other drugs to cope with their overwhelming feelings, often resulting in further difficulties.
