Computer use guidelines

Conditions of use

The Library provides computers to assist you with your studies. Students must follow the guidelines and be aware that any infringement may result in disciplinary action and the withdrawal of computer privileges. Internet access is filtered to prevent the loading of some sites. If this filtering prevents you from accessing a site related to your course work, please speak to Library staff.


Guidelines

These guidelines and prohibited activities cover the use of computers and internet facilities in the Library.

  • A student/staff login is required to access the computers; temporary logins are also available.
  • The default time limit for computer use is 2 hours per session. This will be automatically extended as long as the computer hasn't been booked by someone else.
  • Computers may be pre-booked via StudentWeb.
  • Bookings will be cancelled if you are more than 10 minutes late.
  • Computers left unattended or locked for more than 10 minutes will be automatically logged off.
  • The Library computers shutdown 5 minutes before the Library closes at the end of the day.
  • Log out when your session is completed to protect your account.
  • The student computer network does not save copies of your work. Make sure you save your work regularly.


Prohibited activities

  • Viewing of obscene or offensive* materials.
  • Use of computer games except as a formal component of a course.
  • Interference with other students’ PC use.
  • Use of another student’s login to access computers.
  • Transmission of computer viruses to Library computers.
  • Threat or harassment of another person through the use of the computers.
  • Misuse of any computer hardware.
  • Accessing or bypassing any computer security systems.
  • Interfering with or changing any equipment or authorised equipment settings.
  • Using chat lines except for study purposes.
  • Infringing copyright, illegally downloading or copying files (eg music, film, software) See the Copyright page for details
  • Using file sharing or P2P software to download MP3 music or movies files.
  • Sending, storing or displaying anything abusive, threatening, defamatory or obscene

* Obscene or offensive material is defined as: ‘Material that depicts matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, violence or revolting or abhorrent phenomena in a way that offends the standards of morality and decency generally accepted by reasonable adults.’ This definition is modified from the Victorian State legislation definition used in Classification (Publications, films and computer games) (enforcement) 1995.

These guidelines have been established with reference to the 'Student code of conduct'.

Anyone breaching the Institute’s Student Code of Conduct or policies or procedures on use of equipment and facilities may be:

  • Suspended or barred from using the facilities
  • Face disciplinary action.

Anyone breaching state or federal laws may face prosecution.

Library staff will monitor and regulate usage to ensure that the computing and Internet facilities are being used for the purpose for which they are intended.
