Task instructions

1. Review the provided resources on:

  • Animal welfare and ethics
  • Identifying dogs
  • Hazards to humans and animals
  • Policies and procedures
  • Dogs, shelters, and compliance with the law
  • Dog body language and behaviour
  • Training equipment for animals
  • Walking and exercising dogs
  • Plus any additional resources you have located and found to be of use throughout your studies

2. Assessment task 3 is made up of two components; a practical (Walking Dogs Practical) and a written assessment (Hazard, identification, behaviour and exercise log).

  • In order to complete the written component, students will undertake direct observation by a supervisor to demonstrate practical competency in various tasks surrounding handling and exercising three individual dogs. Assessors will complete the ‘Walking Dogs Practical Observation Checklist’ and return these to students so both documents can be uploaded together when it comes time to submit.
  • Each walking practical will involve students demonstrating their ability to; obtain relevant patient information for each dog, assess each dog’s suitability for walking, including basic health, emotional state, physical capability of the dog to undertake exercise, and advised client or workplace of any issues, identify hazard and minimise risks related to self and dog/s, positively reinforce appropriate behaviour for each dog, handle each dog in a safe, low stress manner using appropriate equipment and maintain a workplace log and records.
  • During (or after) students have completed each walking practical (totalling 3 dogs), students are required to complete the ‘Hazard, identification, behaviour and exercise log’. The assessment is a document that has students identify, determine and evaluate each individual dog’s needs and exercise requirements whilst completing documentation regarding other observations such as FAS scores and health evaluations.

3. To be marked Satisfactory for this practical, students must correctly complete each task listed within the observation checklist correctly. Each task should be assessed as Satisfactory (S) or Not Satisfactory (NS), feedback should be provided in some areas as necessary, and the assessor/supervisor should sign the checklist at the end. The student should then submit this document alongside any additional documentation outlined above in the “What to submit” section (if any). If the student submits this document with NS or nothing ticked for any task, without feedback in some tasks, or without an assessor signature they will not be eligible to pass the assessment on that attempt.
