Being active

Being active has both physical and mental health benefits. The benefits of exercise can include a healthier body, improved mood, more energy, less stress, better sleep, a sense of achievement and increased self-confidence. Exercise can also be a great way to meet new people and make friends.

Getting started or motivated to exercise can be challenging so start simple and be active every day in as many ways as you can - walk to the shops instead of driving, take the stairs instead of the lift. Think of movement as an opportunity, not an inconvenience.

Choose an activity that you will enjoy and fits with your lifestyle. This way you are more likely to stick at it. Do your prefer to exercise on your own or play a team sport? Or maybe both?

Think about what will keep you interested. It’s important not to get bored, so you may need to mix it up. Walking and swimming? Tennis and yoga? Cycling and weight-lifting?

Choose a time of the day/week that works for you. Are you more motivated in the morning, afternoon or evening?

Notice your progress and hang in there. Exercise releases chemicals in your brain that make you feel good.
