Dangerous dogs, restricted breeds and menacing dogs

Dangerous dogs, restricted breeds and menacing dogs are categories of dogs that have specific restrictions on keeping and ownership limitations as set out by the Domestic Animals Act and the Regulations 2015. 

The definition of each category is as follows:

• A dangerous dog is a dog that has been trained to attack or is kept to guard nonresidential premises or has been declared dangerous due to it causing serious injury to a person or animal. Serious injury includes broken bones, lacerations requiring multiple sutures or cosmetic surgery or the total or partial loss of sensation or function in a part of the body.
  
• A menacing dog is one that has rushed at or chased a person; for example, if a dog has approached a person at a distance of less than three metres snarling, growling or with raised heckles. This dog has not actually bitten anyone but has the ability to put fear in a person and covers the potential of the dog to cause problems in the future.
• A restricted dog breed are those which are not allowed to be imported into Australia (see below).
