What you'll need

To follow along with this resource you will need:

  • A computer.
    • Mac or PC is fine.
  • Headphones.
    • Ideally good quality ones made for music production, but whatever you have will work fine for now.
  • A copy of Ableton Live (more on how to get that in the next step).

Though not explicitly required, some other items that could help include:

  • A MIDI keyboard.
  • Speakers.
    • Again, ideally "monitor speakers" made for music production but whatever you have will be fine.
  • An audio interface.
  • A microphone, instrument, or similar to record.

If you're unsure about any of those items, don't worry, they will be covered in the relevant lesson material.

Accessing Ableton Live

These are your options for getting access to the software Ableton Live:

  • When working on your own computer, you can get a free trial edition of Ableton Live for 30 days from: https://www.ableton.com/en/trial/
  • Once you are an enrolled student, you can access the computers and labs on campus at any time. For more information about that access, please contract musicadmin@boxhill.edu.au or on 9286 9785
  • Additionally once you are an enrolled student, you may be able to get assistance with acquiring a personal copy of the software (speak to your music production teacher).

As a new student if you are having trouble or just have questions, please feel free to reach out to us (using the details above) and we will do what we can to help.

Disclaimer: Different versions This resource contains content that may have been made with older versions of Ableton Live. You might see in images and videos a slightly different looking interface as a result. However the core concepts remain the same, and hopefully it won't be too much trouble to navigate any slight changes in the user interface. We will endeavour to update all important parts as soon as we're able. If you'r really stuck with anything, the concepts will always remain the same so you will know what terms to search for online.

Once you are ready, you can navigate to the first lesson to get started!
